I think they're getting stupider.
So I get an email from a website asking about some potential design work, and when I visit it...I noticed it was oddly familiar. A quick check in the code reveals that it is definitely a stolen template of mine. We're talking, the code was still in the header, a nice comment of "This is a template copyrighted by Seraph's Company, unauthorized use is strictly prohibited, copyright violations will be pursued.".
So, I drop the owner a quick email politely asking for them to remove the template, and explaining I won't do any work for them until they remedy this. Of course, being one of the people in the industry...this ended up being fun.
SC: Hi, what is this that I am stealing your template? I bought this site a month ago, I have not stolen.
Seraph: I'm sorry, the fact remains that the template is stolen, you need to remove the template, or purchase a license.
SC: No, I'm not stealing your template, you are LYING! You just want money!
Seraph: Dude, it says right in your code, right click and view source, copyrighted by Seraph's Company.
SC: Well, I bought this from you! You made this design for me! You've just forgotten
Seraph: No, no I didn't, and I'd remember if I did, and even THEN, you are not in any of my records.
SC: Whatever, its not my problem
Seraph: If you don't remove the template within 24 hours, I will file a DMCA notice with your hosting provider to have the template pulled directly. So, either way...
SC: NO. GOODBYE.
The template stayed up, and as I was in the middle of writing my notice, I get an email from someone...who turned out to be the second partner/owner for that site. He claimed that I was harassing his partner, and that they are not at fault for the template, they'd bought the site from someone else, so all fault lied with who they bought it from.
I explained that no, sorry, that's not how this works, and that they needed to still remove the template, or purchase the license. Of course, he refuses, and blocks my email afterwards.
Eh well, they asked for it. I've just finished sending the notice to their hosting provider, and as an added bonus, texted the hosting provider owner's cell about it. Knowing him, it'll be removed within the day.
What do yall want to bet they'll freak out after it and come after me, claiming its my fault?
