One more thing: CounterSpy, as long as it's run in safe mode is the only commercial scanner that is able to successfully remove that fake "you are infected" alert that a lot of people seem to get infested with.

Lavasoft, the makers of Ad-Aware came under fire in one of the technical forums I visit sometimes, because they caved in when one of these companies made a similar threat. I think it was only temporary while they re-evaluated the other product, and they ended up re-enabling the detection in the end. Still, a lot of people were pissed.

Yank the drive and hook it up as a non-boot drive on another system, then run the scan and fixes that way. Replace once clean.

Hum... I can do that on faculty and staff machines, but we're not allowed to open cases on student machines.

AVG or F-Prot Antivirus should do the trick for that....

Or grab BartPE and make a bootable USB key, make sure you've got the latest AV and anti spyware on the key as well and you're set

I tested it on a really bad off machine. It looks like the "friend" she let borrow her laptop downloaded everything under the sun. I had a "scanner" even try popping up in safe mode! I didn't even know that was possible! I booted back normally, was able to uninstall the "scanner", get Counter Spy installed, booted back into safe mode for the scan.

Afterwards I booted back normally, and deemed the machine clean. Which I was happy to be able to do with one scan, and not two or three.
