Thank you for the mass response to this thread.

I reported both calls to a coworker and manager.

Knowing how this company works, nothing's going to become of it.

If anything else happens, I'll keep ya posted.

Seriously, how the hell did this guy get, and keep his job? He can't even handle simple concepts (IP addys, zip files, etc.) yet is probably a level or two up the food chain? Pardon my French, but how the fuck is that even possible?
More likely, he is the only one who knows some obscure legacy system that fails often, but is difficult/expensive to upgrade, so the company just keeps chugging along with it. I was only half kidding about the UNIX admin thing, as I've seen that sort of thing way too many times. Mr. Important knows his stuff about one critical system, but refuses to learn anything else. He doesn't have to because right now, it would take a dead girl/live boy situation for him to be fired.

ouch...that hurts to the core....or my kernal as it were

as a unix admin, I have seen so much resistance to using anything that isnt *nix based in some way, shape, and or form.

What really sucks is taking over from someone who wasnt a unix person, who cant explain how the servers are set up, and has no documentation. Thats what I am currently experiencing, and on top of it I am now being threatened with my job....

        gotta love it....

Ugh. Now that's messed up. I actually know very little about Unix. Yet, I am the only tech at work who can fix the server. Of course, that thing is Windows based...since all it really runs is our proprietary database, print server, and generates our reports. We'd thought about getting a Unix server for all that stuff. However, the database software won't work reliably with it. Too many annoying delays and crashes. What can I say, other than it works...and if it does fail...it's a simple matter of shifting everything to an unused workstation, remapping the drives, and continuing until I can fix the server. It's gotten so, I can swap everything over, troubleshoot the server, fix it, and then move everything back in a few hours
