Oaky's Oatmeal Stout from Angry Minnow Brewing

Pours like motor oil. Fairly thin head. The nose is non existent.

Taste: Kinda sweet, at first. Then the chocolate flavors kick in. Nice flavor, and a good representation of an oatmeal stout.

Not a review, but I did participate in history yesterday. Here in Minnesota, the liquor stores are closed on Sunday. Recently there was a law passed, and signed into law where you can, now, go to a brew pub and get growlers of beer to go on Sundays. All that had to happen is the city where the brewpub is located had to approve it. Montgomery, MN was the first one to do so, and the Montgomery Brewing Company was open, and selling growlers yesterday, and I was there to join in the fun. It was PACKED! Kirsch Gose Sour Cherry Beer Victory Brewing Company

Nice red color wih a very thick head. I get a sour smell from the nose.

Taste : nice sour taste. Sour cherry flavor. Sour beers aren't for everybody, but this works for me.

Alaskan Big Mountain Pale Ale - 5.7% ABV

Dark golden in color, with minimal head. Get a nice hop smell in the nose.

Taste : some hops in the taste, but they are fairly mellow. Fairly easy to drink on a nice hot day, like today.

Blaze Orange from Valkyre Brewing Company.

Light golden color, with a fairly thick head. The nose is very orange smelling.

Taste : oh, yeah, it is very orange tasting. Maybe not as much as OJ, but it's there. I also get some wheat in the beer. A bit heaver than I thought it would be, but not bad

What's better than booze? Free booze! A beer rep came into to talk to my bar manager about certain products, and gave me a sample bottle of a new product from a familiar cidery...

Woodchuck Gumption Hard Cider (Vermont, 5.5% ABV): Amber colored, darker than the average cider. Subtle nose of roasted apples. Good Apple taste without being too sweet, as many ciders are. Slightly tart finish, which contrasts with the initial sweet apple taste. Interesting and different, without being weird. Goes really well with spicy food, which I am eating. 6.5.

Supernova Royal Australian Style IPA from Valkyre Brewing.

Nice dark amber color. a bit of head. As soon as I opened it, I smelled something good. I get hops and something else, that I can't describe.

Taste: It isn't hoppy, at first. The hops kick in in the aftertaste. Very interesting beer. If you're not an IPA fan, it wouldn't be for you. I am.

Also tonight I stopped at the Beaver Island Brewing Co. and enjoyed their Ripple beer infused with mango, using a hop Rocket. It was interesting. The mango was in the background, and not very prominent, but a great addition to that beer.

Please, Vic, for the uninitiated, explain what a hop rocket is. (I had to ask him myself.)

On to beers that aren't rocket science...

Shiner Prickly Pear Summer Seasonal (Texas, 4.9% ABV): Far darker than I would have expected from either a summer or a beer using prickly pear, it's a dark reddish amber with high clarity. The nose is sweet, fragrant, and fruity, in a very natural, un-artificial way. On the tongue, it has a light body, is easy drinking, and is slightly fruity, but overall unremarkable. Tasty and quenching, but the nose promised something special, and honestly....it isn't. 5.5.

Yes, I should explain what a Hop Rocket is. I had never heard of one before a few days ago.

A Hop Rocket is device used to infuse extra flavors into a beer, after kegging. You can infuse extra hops, or anything else. The beer that I had was infused with mangos. Pretty cool looking device.

Now to the reviews.

Sir Duluth Oatmeal Stout from Lake Superior Brewing.

Pours, and looks like motor oil - a good sign I hope. There is a bit of head, but not much. There is a pretty awesome nose.

Taste - At first it was bland, but that lasted for a second. The flavors then kicked in, big time. I get hints of chocolate, and lots of malts. It also has hints of barrel aging, but I'm not sure it is aged.

Takeout Rye IPA from the Utah Brewers Cooperative. 6.26%

Thicker head, dark amber colored. There's some hops on the nose.

Taste - Interesting. Some hops, but not a lot. Fairly easy drinking. If you're not a hop head, you might like this.

Shiner Prickly Pear from the Spotzel Brewery. 4.9% ABV

I have never had prickly pear, so this should be interesting.

Light amber in color, with minimal head. The nose is very interesting. I wish I knew how to describe it, but I do like what I smell.

Taste : very light tasting. That being said, there is a nice flavor to it. I would assume that it is the prickly pear. This is a perfect beer for a hot summer day.

Outlaw IPA from Two Brothers Brewing. 6.3% ABV and 60 IBU

Darker golden color with a fairly thick head. There is a lovely hop smell in the nose.

Taste : pretty bland, to be honest. Second sip confirms it. Not much in the way of a hop bite that I love so much, and not much in the way of other flavors. I would not recommend this for IPA lovers. A big disappointment from them, because their other beers that I've tried have been good.
