  • Now for an interesting review.

The beer I'm having tonight is a beer that's mase in LaCrosse, Wisconsin, and just has, within the last few weeks, made it to dentral Minnesota. How did I find out about it? Jester told me about it. Apparently some patrons from Wisconsin were telling him about it, and he told me about it.

    so, here it is.

Not Your Father's Root beer From Small Town Brewery in LaCrosse 5.9% ABV

Pours like motor oil, and is very dark. It had a nice, frothy head that dissipated fast. It smells like root beer.

Taste: it tastes like root beer. Seriously, it does. I do not detect alcohol at all. This is good, but could be extremeely dangerous, very dangerous.

    7.5 out of 10

EDIT upon reflection, this beer deserves an 8 out of 10.

No that isn't a typo, it is almost 17% ABV

It pours like motor oil, and is pitch black with a little bit of head, that dissipates fairy fast. The nose is strong. You smell the bourbon barrel in it, and it smells very good.

Now to the taste: Very smooth. Wow, it is strong, though. It is very pleasing to the palate, even my hot sauce burnt out one. This however is not a drinking beer, unless you like to suffer. You need to sip it and take a lot of time with it. While this isn't perfection that the Dogfish Head 120 Minute IPA was, it is damn good.

Oddly enough, I tried it myself last night, as one of my friends posted on Facebook that they had gotten it in at her bar.

Smells just like root beer. Awesome.
Tastes just like root beer. Awesome.
Horribly bitter aftertaste that is nothing whatsoever like root beer. Not so awesome.

The aftertaste kills it for me, and I can't for the life of me figure out how something that tastes so much like root beer has such a vile aftertaste.

Without the aftertaste, I would have scored this a 7.0, maybe higher. With the aftertaste, I have to downgrade it all the way to a 3.0. Yes, the aftertaste was THAT bad.

        • I didn't get an aftertaste in NYFRB at all. I wonder if something was wrong with the one you had. Since it's my first day off in a month, I might have to do some more research.

          • And my second bottle of NYFRB I got no bitter aftertaste. I really don't know what to say.

But I will say that a Schell's Fresh Hop will be a good beer to start off my grilling session, well, while I'm waiting for the coals to get ready, anyway.

Light golden color, with a thick head that dissipated quickly. I get a citrusy nose.

Taste: Yes, there's a lot of hops in it, but it doesn't have as much of a hop bite as expected. I get a nice citrus flavor also. A perfect beer for a sunny mid 80's day grilling

              • Forgive Booze Clubbers, for I have sinned.

I broke a bottle of Aecht beer. It fell out of my fridge when I opened it to put the nummy grilled foods in it.

I have been ordered to pay for my sins by buying another bottle of it. I will do so.

                Now to the next beer.

Trooper from Robinsons Brewery- 4.7% ABV

Amber colored, with a little head. There is a nose, but hard to describe.

Taste: This is a hard beer to describe. There is citrus flavor in it. There is a malty flavor to it. While I am not an Iron Maiden fan (I prefer AC/DC or the Nuge), I am a fan of this beer.

Easy drinking for a nice hot first day of summer (sorry for those down under who are having their firs day of winter).

                    Now to the next one.

Andygator Helles Doppelbock from Abita Brewing. 8.0% ABV

Frothy head, amber colored. Not much nose, just a slight hops smell.

Taste: good. Kinda sweet, kinda fruity, but not obnoxiously so. This isn't bad at all. Even though it's 8%, it is an easy drinking beer on a nice day.

Nice brown color, thick head. Nose i can't detect.

Taste : ok, hello! The king of our solar system planets should have a big taste. This does. It is a good brown ale. Good flavor. Good beer.

                      • Final one of the night, and, since I've had a sip of it before, time to torture myself.

Lakefront Brewery New Grist gluten free beer.

Bloody, hell, the head is ridiculous. It is golden in color. Nose is somewhat sweet.

Taste: Well, as I'm somewhat drunk, heck, toasted, this isn't bad, at the moment. It is a bit sweet for me, but as a pretty drunk beer, could be worse.

3.5 out of 10. if it were the first of the night, it would be way lower.

To be more precise, he texted me with his sin and asked me what to do. Being caught off guard, as I had other stuff going on (see next post), I told him to simply by another Aecht and drink it.

                          I erred.

He should do that, but he should also recite the Beer Prayer at least three times in contrition, and between each, take a long healthy draught from whatever beer he is drinking at the time.

                          Get on that, Vic!

                          • With every cloud comes a silver lining.

The cloud: World of Beer Key West has closed. We knew it was coming, but we thought it would be another month or so, as that was what the owners had told the management and the staff. So Thursday night, as I was drinking there, I had no idea it would be my last night there. Friday, they did not open. It was official. My living room for the past 2+ years had closed its doors.

So today, after taking part in a "floatilla" (bunch of people gather in the water off the beach on various inflatables, and have a generally good time), I was sitting having lunch when I got a text from the wife of the owner of WoB KW. They wanted to know if I'd like to come down and take some beer home.

Well, gee, let me think about that one.

So I headed down there, figuring they'd sell me some at a discount. Nope. They had had the vendors in already to remove most of the product, but they still had plenty, and they said I could take whatever I'd like. For free.

Free beer? Hell to the yes!

So knowing that I have limite space in my apartment, as I share it with two others, and knowing that I already had a beer stash that was a bit overflowing, I picked and chose carefully.....and still somehow ended up taking home 156 freaking beers. My friend who is also my neighbor, and who was an employee there, also went down there....and came back with 246 beers! We helped each other unload each haul, and actually made a few trades.

For those true beer geeks, below is the list of my haul, including the trades I made:

Andechs Dopplebock Dunkel, 1 large bottle.

Stoudt's Fat Dog Imperial Oatmeal Stout, 4 bottles.
Troubadour Obscura Mild Stout, 4 bottles.
Tucher Kristall Weizen, 2 large bottles.
Victory Storm King Imperial Stout, 4 bottles (1 of which I traded away).
                            Widmer Alchemy Ale, 6 bottles.
                            Zywiec Porter, 3 large bottles.

Here is what I got in return for my grades:
Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier Marzen, large bottle.
                            Nostradamus Belgian Brown Ale bottle.
Ommegang Three Philosophers Quadrupel Ale bottle.
                            Piraat Belgian Ale bottle
Trappistes Rochefort 6 Belgian Ale bottle
                            Tripel Karmeliet bottle

Not bad for a day in which I actually only paid for one beer all day!

Apparently I missed a whole stash of Aecht Marzens, and my aforementioned friends grabbed most of it. But they left some behind for me! And I got what was left, which sadly, was only 3 of them.

But that brings my grand total up to 159 free beers. Which, when you really think about it, is obnoxiously stupid.
