  • Probably a crazy idea, but another review tonight.

    Valkyre Brewing Company War Hammer

    It's a coffee milk porter.

Itbpours like motor oil, and is as black as Gravekeeper's heart after dealing with people from Nunavut. It has a nice thick head also. The nose has a slight coffee scent to it.

Taste : oh, my goodness, this is good. Yeah, there is a coffee hint to it, but it isn't obnoxious. It is so balanced with the milk flavor, it makes it very easy to drink. Another home run from Valkyre Brewing. This is the best coffee beer I've had, I think. 8 out of 10.

In keeping with your similies, wouldn't that be "it has a head as thick as a SC's skull"?
Any fool can piss on the floor. It takes a talented SC to shit on the ceiling.

I'm going to Chicago on Thursday,
Although it doesn't garner much love from my friends, I liked Goose Island's 312 wheat, but much more on tap than bottled. I gather they have a "Bourbon County" line now that's mostly Imperial Stouts (but includes a couple of barleywines) that's very well thought of.

Have fun in any case. Going into town or just the 'burbs?

        • As a wheat beer fan, I must admit I am not at all impressed with the 312. Don't like a lot of the Goose Island stuff, to be honest, although they do have some good higher end stuff, and I'll admit that the Bourbon County stout pretty much kicks ass.

          • I got a mysterious package today at work, and what do I see when I open it? Beer. MMMMMM beer. Delicious beer - Cigar City Good Gourd - Southern Star Brewing Buried Hatchet Stout - Due South Brewing Caramel Cream Ale - Four Peaks Brewing Kilt Lifter - and Cigar City Maduro.

So tonight, after work, I'll have some fun.

Thanks so much Jester. I can't wait to start reviewing them.

            • Ok, here goes. First Jester beer

Cigar City Maduro - it's a Brown Ale.

Nice thick head when poured. It's really dark brown in color. I don't get a nose from it.

Taste: ooooooooooo. I followed the awesome Jester's advice, and made sure it was damn cold. Very good advice for this beer. I think the cold really brings out the chocolate and caramel flavors in the beer. Really delicious. ReLly good. Makes me want to go back to Florida, like now! 8 out of 10 is a very good rating for a very good beer. If you're ever in Florida, get this beer!

              Again, thank you Jester!

              • And to end tonight, the second Jester beer

                Due South Caramel Cream Ale.

As it's name implies, it's caramel colored, with a frothy head when poured. There is a slight caramel nose to it.

Taste : really caramel tasting. I don't drink soda pop anymore, and haven't in a long time, but it reminds me of cream soda in a way. It is a really nice beer, though a bit sweeter than I'm used to. 6.5 out of 10.

                • I typed this up last night, but was having issues with my internet, so am posting it this morning....

Speaking of packages of wonderfulness, Mr. Victory Sabre sent me some loveliness from his neck of the woods. Though it's Fantasy Fest down here in Key West and I doubt I'll have much time to try them, tonight is a rainy night off for me, and I decided to not bother going downtown, as many of the big parties were postponed, cancelled, or simply made miserable and/or impossible due to the deluge.

Jack'd Up Autumn Ale (Third Street Brewhouse, Minnesota, 5.4% ABV): Delicious looking orangey brown color, and a bit hazy. Slightly pumpkiny nose. Delicious taste, with pumpkin and holiday spices and all kinds of yummies going on. And yet, it's not over the top, as some beers are. Well-balanced and delicious. I could drink this any time of the year, and it would go with most food. A solid 7.0 score.

Next up, one that Vic has talked about a lot, and I was intrigued about. From New Glarus Brewing in Wisconsin, it's Pumpkin Pie Lust (5.5% ABV*). It pours thick and dark, basically a dark burgundy color, with a thick fluffy slightly off white head. The nose is almost nonexistent, but I do detect some sweetness.

The taste is....okay. From the name and the appearance, I expected more from this beer. It is decent, I guess, and definitely not unpleasant, but it doesn't really bring much of a pumpkin, pumpkin pie, or pumpkin spice flavor to the table. The mouth feel is very velvety, which is a plus, but that is the highest praise I can give to this beer. Even if I ignore what I expected, this is still nothing more than a decent beer. Definitely not all that memorable. I give it a 6, much of it due to the mouth feel. *yawn*

Moving right along, the much talked about (by Vic) New Glarus Spotted Cow Ale (4.8% ABV). It's light orange in color and slightly hazy. As with the others, not much of a nose, but nothing horrible, either. As with the Pumpkin Pie Lust, a really nice mouth feel. Texturally, these beers have it going on. Taste wise, it's a very nice ale, with a bit of wheatiness to it, something that is always a plus for me. Very drinkable, very tasty. I give it a 6.5.

                  * I normally have no problem finding the ABV of a beer, but this one was tougher than most. It wasn't listed on the bottle, and my normally reliable sources of ratebeer.com and beeradvocate.com both had no ABV listed for it. Took me a bit of searching, but one site did list it as being the ABV I posted, but I am not completely certain that that is accurate.

Taste - nice mellow flavor to it with a hoppy after taste. it works well together 6 out of 10.

Nice amber color to it. there was a bit of a head to it. Not too much nose to it.

Taste - hmmmm. I was expecting more of Killians lavor to this beer, but it isn't anything close to i. It has a slight sweetness to it. this is a strange beer to say the least, but I do like it. 6.5 out of 10.

Realy nice murky golden color. no head to it. nice nose to it. You can really detect a citrus nose.

Taste - a very good weisse beer. nice citrus taste.I think not having Iit filtered adds to the complexity of this beer, and I like it a lot. 7 out of 10.

Darker golden in color, with little head when poured. nice hoppy nose to it.

Taste - it has a strange flavor. not very hoppy. It is somewhat bland on the taste, but has a bit of a kick on the aftertaste. I think I'll give it a 4 out of 10. not a very good IPA.

Nice thick head when poured from the tap. Dark golden in color. Slight hop nose to it

Taste - nice hop bite with a first aftertaste that is sweet, then switches back to hoppy. if you don't like IPAs, you won't like it, but I do. this is a good drinking beer for the IPA fan, and I'll give it a 6.5 out of 10.

Really dark, pitch black. nice head to it. no nose to it

Taste - well, it was unexpected. it's a really sweet beer. it's a dark honey ale, and that is very strong in it. I don't mind a little sweet, but it's too much for my taste. 4 out of 10.
