  • No reviews today, but I got some good booze news this morning. A truck driver who comes in to fill up, has to head out east, on his regular run, was asked by someone who did some work for him if he could get some Yuengling beer. He said he would get some, and this morning he asked me if I wanted some more. Well, of course, I said YES!

So some Yuengling will be coming my way next week. Score!

    • Better not let that info get around too far - that driver's operating illegally. In the U.S., with very few exceptions (and those are along the lines of supplies for the passengers on a party bus) it's a violation of FMCSA regulations for booze to be present in a commercial motor vehicle unless it's manifested as cargo. Even if it's in a compartment that can only be accessed from outside the vehicle, it's not allowed. A number of Canadian drivers have been caught after buying at the Duty Free (which is usually a few hundred metres before the border - and therefore still subject to U.S. law).

      • And to a review tonight. After a stupid long day, it'll taste good.

Beer Camp Tater Ridge made with Asheville Brewers. 7.0 ABV and 35 IBU

Now we'll see how beer made with sweet potatoes taste.

Very dark brown, almost black, with a nice thick head. I think I get the sweet potatoes in the nose.

Taste : It is the most interesting Scotch Ale I've had. You get the sweet potato in the aftertaste, the taste is pretty standard for a Scotch ale. I'm not sure it works, but it isn't the worst beer I've had either. I don't know if I'd buy this if it were a regular release. 4.5 out of 10.

        • Next review

Beer Camp Yvan the Great made with Russian River Brewing Company - 6.3ABV 50 IBU.

Nice golden color, with a rich, frothy head. The nose is pleasing, but hard to describe.

Taste: very easy to drink. Nice smooth flavor with a bite of hops. Not bad at all. 6.5 out of 10.

If I've got it, right, I'm down to 3 Beer Camp beers. Can't wait to try the Cigar city, and New Glarus contributions to ths pack.

            • I loved looking at those beers, and would love to try them all.

Final Beer Camp review this week.

Beer Camp Electric Ray made with Ballast Point Brewing - 8.5% ABV 70 IBU

It's a India Pale Lager. That sounds interesting.

Nice thick head, and nice darker golden color. The nose is smells like an IPA.

Taste : It also tastes a lot like an IPA as well. You get a nice hop bite. It reminds me a lot of the Raygun IPA from Backpocket Brewing. It's delicious for me. If you're not an IPA fan, even though it isn't one, you might not like it. Since I am, it tastes good.

              7 out of 10

              • Finally feeling better after a stupid cold, so it's time for a review. A Jester beer

                Southern Star Buried Hatchet Stout

Nice black color to it with a thick, frothy head. I smell a really nice, strong chocolate nose.

Taste : holy crap! This is delicious. It's got a nice flavor to it. Lots of malt in it, and it is so good. This is a solid 8 outof 10 for me. It is so good, I'm shaking every last drop out of the can.

                • Weihenstephaner Korbinian - 7.4% ABV

Beautiful brown color, and a thick frothy head that lasts.

The nose is pretty good. I can smell the malts in it.

Taste: Nice rich flavor. It always amazes me that such variety can come from beer brewed using the Reinheitsgebot. The malts and hops really work well together. I'd say I'll get this beer again, because it is so good. If you get the chance to try this beer, I highly recommend it. You won't be sorry. I'll give it a 9 out of 10. The oldest brewery really knows their stuff.

                  • As far as I can tell, I haven't reviewed this beer, yet, and I have no idea how long it's been sitting in my fridge. So, here goes

New Glarus Cabin Fever Honey Bock

Nice light golden color, with a thick head that sticks around. I get some honey notes from the nose.

Taste: Smooth flavor going down, with the honey very prominent, however it isn't an obnoxious amount, either. It's got the right amount of sweetness for my taste. It's a very easy drinking beer, and still good after who knows how long it's been in the fridge.

My favorite beer of all time. The only beer I've ever given a score of 10 out of 10 to. The first time I tasted it, my notes read simply, "Proof that Germans perfected beer."

Odell/Boulevard Silver Anniversary ale. 7.4% ABV.

Nice frothy head that sticks around for a long time. The nose you really smell hops.

Taste: it is hoppy, but not overly so. It has a, almost sweet aftertaste. An interesting beer for sure. 6 out of 10.

                        • After a long day of driving the equivalent of Phoenix to Los Angeles, but without the benefit of Western freeway speeds, I am back home in Key West and very, very tired. Time for a beer!

From the Vic Collection (what our friend Victory Sabre sent me a while back), it's Stone Arch Scottish Style Ale from Wisconsin (4.7% ABV). The color is a nice reddish copper amber. The nose is odd, both fruity and pungent. The taste is much better than the nose, thank goodness. It's a bit rich, with flavors of stone fruits and caramel. It's not the best Scottish ale I've had, but it's certainly not the worst. But if I'm gonna be honest, I can only rate it a 5.5.

On a different note, part of my travels brought me to my favorite liquor store, which is up in Miami. And the beer haul I took away from them included beers from New York, Pennsylvania, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Michigan, Maryland, Colorado, Georgia, Belgium, Germany, England, the Netherlands, Ireland, Laos, and a collaborate effort between breweries from Norway and Georgia (the state, not the country). Not bad for a bit of shopping! And I was even in hurry mode, as I had to get my friend to the airport in Fort Lauderdale.

Can't wait to drink some of them. And, oh yeah, review them or something.

Stone Arch really rocks. Love their First Snow, an American Black. They make wonderful soda pop as well.

Hope Jebby threw some fed highway dollars there while his brother was president - it was a mess last time I was through there.

Yes, it was a mess when I was there, back in April. Hopefully it's better now.

Sorry about the Stone Arch. I've liked it a lot. I had bought it back in June. I don't know if it had been sitting too long.

                              • Time for a review, and it's a Beer Camp beer.

Beer Camp Yonder Bock, brewed with Cigar City Brewing - 7.7% ABV & 45 IBU.

This beer is one of the two main reasons I wanted the Beer Camp collection. I hope it's good.

Nice amber color, with a thick head that is lasting for a while. The nose is very fruity. I really get mango in it.

Taste : well the nose is very fruity, but it doesn't translate into the taste much. I do get a nice hop flavor out of the beer. As I drink more I am getting a little more fruit flavor in the beer. Drinking this beer make me think of the nice warm weather in Florida, and the fun I had in Fort Lauderdale and Key West. An interesting beer for sure. 6.5 out of 10.

One Beer Camp beer left. I can't wait to try the one from New Glarus Brewing.
