One of our cats is a Maine Coon. One lady once asked us if it was her father or mother who was a raccon. When we looked at her funny, she explained that Maine Coons are the result of cross-breeding cats with raccoons, and that "everybody knows that."

We are not idiots, and we didn't believe it for a second. But later, we talked to her breeder and asked about it. Apparently this myth has been around as long as the Maine Coon breed has been.

Seriously, I wonder if this SC didn't have a Pekinese and some other kind of dog. Maybe something that she'd been told was a cross between a wirehaired terrior and an American bulldog (is there such a thing?). And her little SC brain latched on to "American shorthair" because she'd heard it once. And of course when Skandranon said "one of them's a cat" that made no sense whatsoever, because, as we all know, SCs don't listen.
