  • SC's who bitch and complain about the busy line-ups

Ever worked at a place of business where you are short of cashiers?, People lining up in Courtesy when there is no-one there and a Service Manager who runs Self-serve and CSM? Customers bitch about how long they have waited in line so the CSM's explain about all the cashiers who called in sick, a couple of the self-serve tills aren't working, herself being the only CSM on and yada yada, all the while she says she will pass it on to the manager who has to listen to more customer complaints from the shortage of people. I get people sometimes who tell me how long they have waited in my line-up while other tills are open. "You've waited that long oh that's nice". Some idiot was flipping out because he came to a till with the light turned off and the guy didn't serve him so he throws this huge fit to the Manager because he was rejected even though it wasn't even hardly that busy. Christmas is coming I lucked out of working because of my foot so I have to rest for a while. There may be lots of bitching and complaining amongst the SC's but I'm relieved to not put up with it!!
Providing Excellent customer service and Filtering out nonsense people.

I've had that happen before. There were several nights at the second grocery store where we were super short handed. Due to how the computer scheduled the front end for about 90 minutes it was myself (who was technically in pricing that day) and the office clerk (who was doing self-scan for little bit as well during this) on checklanes, then the assistant store manager and the Grocery Head bagging. People weren't happy at all.

Shorthanded was THE term to use at that store. If we had more than two-three on the front end during rush we were ecstatic.
Answers are easy...it is asking the right questions which is hard.

I hate that. I was in the Evil Smiley Face last weekend finishing up on my shopping and as always, the store stuck to their usual policy of HAVING 25 checkstands but only PUTTING A CASHIER IN 6 of them. This is understandable to most people, as there is a labor shortage in this area because everyone keeps jumping ship to work in the oilfield for a quick buck, and the other businesses get the short end of the stick. Oh well, they'll get theirs in a few years when the oil around here dries up and they have to attempt to crawl back over the charred remains of all the bridges they burned.

Anyway, that being said, MOST people understand why there are 25 checkstands but only 6 of them have a cashier.

Enter the typical stereotype of an annoying cell phone customer. I overhear her saying (and I quote) "OhmahGAW I am at Walmart and the lines are soooooooooooooooo long I can't believe it! It's going to be a while before I get to come home."

OhmahGAW you're at Walmart, and it's December. THE LINES ARE GOING TO BE LONG. No sh** Sherlock. You're not Moses, the customers aren't going to part just for you like the Red Sea.
      Think. It's not illegal yet.

As for being short at the front end... Black Friday AND Saturday we were out THREE PEOPLE (for both days). Keep in mind my store is relatively small, and we usually only have 4-6 people on staff for any given shift. It SUCKED. It was pretty much me, a framer, MOD, and one other cashier for both days.

I was at my local Borders (book store) yesterday around 2:00, and when I went to check out there was a line, when it'd usually be dead that time of day. Usually there are 1-2 people in line with one cashier, but there were 8 people in line with two cashiers, and a manager that stepped in after a bit. Of course the ass-hat that was *third* in line was making a big deal about the wait and trying to get the other customers in line riled up and create some sort of SC solidarity. "Don't customers mean anything to anyone anymore? I can't believe this--some stores just don't know how to offer good customer service!!" (even though that's an excellent store and I've had only positive experiences there) Shortly after that the manager came up to ring, and the line went down quickly. Of course I had the cashier that ended up checking out the loudmouth guy, and so I told her that I hope she doesn't get anymore ass-holes like him. Gee whiz--you'd think the holidays were coming or something! I hate it when people act surprised about that kind of thing--it's not like they don't know it's mid-December; any store will get a lot busier.

At CVS, those people would have been shown the door, in no uncertain terms, for calling off Black Friday (and the following Saturday just adds insult to injury!).

Let's see... Friday there were two NCNS's and one called off, and Saturday it was the same story, with a different person who called off (she at least had a legitimate reason, and had called off well in advance). This is especially unsettling because three of the people involved are SEASONAL help. As in, their jobs were to work that weekend (and no other days could matter).

It's been getting so busy at my store, they're actually giving away extra hours to the cashiers.

They have a list of available hours at the front registers, and any cashier who wants to come in signs up for the hours they want.

Meanwhile, hours across the rest of the store have been cut.

We have one SC who will find the busiest line and ignore the open register and complai to the cashier about the lines. When the cashier suggests he go to the CS desk to speak w/ a manager about the situation, the SC is always too busy. Either that or her will bother the people in prepared foods, bakery, or floral to get rung out when ther are no lines up front and still complin about the "lines". Again he is too busy to speak w/ the MOD in this situation.

That's exactly why I learned how to run register...and then I got promoted to customer service.

Don't you love the people who bitch about needing money and needing more hours...but are always the ones to call in.

What goes on in their heads...."What you mean I actually have to SHOW UP to get a pay check?"

I had a 'customer' stand at an empty register... he stood there about five minutes, before suddenly yelling at my coworker, "Are you going to call anyone to run this register? I have a return! I've been waiting (time dilation) minutes!"
Great, we can do that at any damn register you like, sir, get your ass in a line. On top of that, that particular register hasn't been assigned to anyone, so anyone we called to cover it would be at least another (time dilation) minutes before they could actually do your return.

I had a woman actually get out of her car, walked to the drive up window and demanded to know what was the hold up. I just ignored that bitch. I was the ONLY person running drive up and she expects me to be fast, fast, fast when I run TWO lanes. Also, its not my fault that the idiots before her don't know of a little thing called "the lobby". Believe me the lobby would be NOT busy and i would have 2 lanes of customers and their lazy asses. Again, not my fault.

This all sounds so familiar! I used to get a lot of that as a cashier three years ago and as a teller these few months.

At the branch I work at, we have been quite shorthanded because some people have been either promoted, fired, resigned, left for family emergencies, or called in sick. Even worse the manager has cut down on our lunch hour. Anyways people have complained about the shortage always shouting the old (especially since I live in a semi-rural area in Texas) , "Y'all better hire more people! This is ridiculous!", to which I have been tempted to say, "Oh, yeah! Let me pull out a teller from our storage room! It comes one in a box!"

We have been trying to keep as many tellers on duty during our busiest times, but unfortunately we have had these sudden rushes (almost as if they all called and agreed to come at the same time). Of all people, I was once surprised this fast-food attendant [she was wearing a Jack-In-The-Box pin] at my teller line was complaining about the long lines and asking me why "we only had a few tellers working?!"

I got that one yesterday! Now, our bank is small and only has very limited hours on Saturday. Drive up is open from 8 - 12, the lobby is open from 9 - 12, and we do have somebody in customer service from 10 - 12. Some branches don't even have lobby service on Saturday, only drive up service. Anyway, I'm at drive up and this guy pulls up needing change. I get it for him and he says, "You should hire more help at x branch! They had a line around the building and I sat for 10 minutes in line then decided to come here instead." I explain to him that x branch only provides drive up service on Saturday but he's more than welcome to come to our branch on Saturday since we usually don't have lines until 10:00 or so. But seriously, what did he expect that branch to do? They only have 2 teller stations at the drive up there so what is more help on Saturday going to do for them?

Most of our line complaints come from customers waiting for customer service. We have 2 CSRs at any given time and there are just some times when everybody and their uncle wants to open an account or dispute a charge on their card. This is why the branch manager is trying to get authorization to get a few tellers trained in basic CSR functions so that these people don't have to wait as long.

But seriously, at a store, I'd be half tempted to hand these idiots who complain about the line an application to work there. Some stores just have staffing issues and unfortunately that's a way of life. If the store is short staffed, and these people complain, then perhaps they should work there to help the lines stay at a reasonable level.
Suddenly, Vermont became the epicenter of the dystopia.

BLARGH THAT IS THE WORST THING EVER.

I cannot STAND it when SCs walk up to a register that CLEARLY has no one standing behind it, and slam their purchases down on the counter and just stand there. Seriously? Walk your ass over to one of the lines where someone is clearly cashiering and park yourself at the back.

How entitled do you think you are that you really think you can just waltz up to a register with no one behind it and expect to be rung up? Do they really expect for someone to immediately RUN over, jump onto the register and cheerfully kiss ass and ring them up? That there was someone hiding underneath a display of tablecloths waiting until that particular SC came to check out with nothing better to do?

                              BLARGH.

                              BLAAAAARGH.
