Fortunetely, however, it's said that lasers are actually made in such a way that despite the warnings - they don't do damage (like the companies knew that people would do it, just put the warning on to scare people)
No, they put the warning on for two reasons.

    1) Some people already have damaged eyes, even the *LOW POWER* lasers could make matters worse.

    2) These idiots may use the *HIGH POWER* lasers and claim they thought it was the same as the low power models and the low powered models had no warning on them. Remember they are SCs and are always looking for an excuse why it was not their responsibility.

Check out: http://www.google.ca/search?q=high+power+laser+pointer some of these laser pointers will start fires, pointed at a person's eye the damage can be very serious indeed.

Fine. Being explicit. CS does not condone violence towards ANY person for ANY reason besides defence of self. This is not something we joke around with.
I do not consider a laser in the eye a joke.

It is an ATTACK. The nature of lasers allows even a very low power one to do damage to one's eye if it focuses properly on the retina. And as for the power of the laser, even the high power ones look just all the rest. Check out http://www.spymodex.com/laser001.htm how do you tell the difference between the 5mw model (harmless) from the 300mw (permanent damage)?

If a person pulls a knife on me I don't ask if it is rubber or metal.
If a person pulls a gun on me I don't ask if it has blanks or real bullets.

      Same for a laser pointer.

Idiots should be banned instead. That would solve all our problems.

edit: My best friend from high school had a "hit list" of people he didn't like. One day he lost the list, so he wrote a new one. "number 1: idiots. And that just about covers it."
I have two sh!t lists - a daily list and a permanent list. The daily list is basically the entire phone book.

But if stores banned idiots, they wouldn't make any money, seeing as how 95% of people are idiots.
Yeah, but who would judge what "idiot" means? Like Karath said, idiots don't think they're being idiots. I mean, sure, we're smarter than them, but... oh, wait, I just answered my own question, didn't I?

No, they put the warning on for two reasons.
There's two class 3 laser types. One is "safe" for quick exposure, one isn't. The lower one is said to be used in devices. The other laser types that you can buy can start a fire -- I saw one that's supposed to be "guaranteed" to start fires or illuminate a spot 10-20miles away. All the lasers though require warning labels (slightly different though).

But these aren't found in your average stores (other than the green lasers which don't seem as common) -- and definitely not for laser pointers. After all, what good is setting your presentation on fire when you're trying to point out things on it?

I'm not saying that they won't cause problems for every single person on the planet. Just overall, given normal common sense practices and some "limited" exposure by idiots flashing people -- the lasers are designed so they won't intentionally blind or cause permanent damage to everyone based on normal reactions of people and the laser properties itself.

The reason/justification behind this is that you blink quicker than the exposure-to-cause-damage; meaning that before you've hit the "damage exposure" you've already blinked so you didn't receive the damage level -- generally. It doesn't mean that you can't, just that you have better odds on not being damaged than being damaged.

All of which is a very fancy way of saying "You've got pretty good chances that you won't suffer permanent damage to your sight should some asshole shine one of these into your unprotected eyes. Here's hoping you beat the odds every time they do."

Sorry, certain things you do not play the odds. One of them is other people's eyesight.

Actually... depending on circumstances (probably didn't apply to her though) a teacher could get a student suspended for something that seems trivial. A few of my classmates were given detention (as a warning for the class, suspension would've happened for anyone after) because they made a loud bang in class -- the teacher was in a war, he heard the bang and hid under the table in fear for his life. If a teacher had been shot once or something that they were using a laser-based targeting thing -- she could potentially get someone suspended for it.
Believe me it didn't apply to her, but I understand where you're coming from. The most anyone has ever gotten for doing what I did was a detention and that was only after they'd been caught a few times.

Should have grabbed your eye and fallen to the ground screaming "OMG MY EYE!" and such. Scare the crap out of the little turd. Course, then you'd have to wear a patch if you really wanted to rub it in.

Those lasers, I hate thee. I was partly blinded in one eye once, because of them. I think that once, when they get shined in the eyes. Then we should do what Blas said. I actually have a laser that is a pen. Maybe I should start carrying that around.

Roommate J (who, it seems, is now no longer my roommate) had one of the lazers that you can cauterize wounds with. Of course, he was an SC about it and returned it when he was done playing with it (it was $800 and he returned it because it was "broken." No, it wasn't.)

To test to see if it really worked, he would fill balloons up at work (he worked at CVS at the time) with helium and on his breaks, let them loose outside and pop them from a distance with the lazer. Amazing shit that was.

And to think that it was in the morning, with little to no crew and an awesome shift manager who was in a good mood from getting in a shouting match with a drunk just a few minutes before (she likes to get rid of troublesome people).

"Save for defense of self" Your rule provides an exclusion to this point. Laser pointers are dangerous and the only way to show kids that they are doing wrong is violence. Either that or the cops.
Broomjockey's post was in reference to shoving the laser pointer into the eye of the kid who pointed it at the OP. That is not self defence.

I don't believe that was open to discussion in the first place, however. Move on.
Too tired of living and too tired to end it. What a conundrum.

ya they can be dangerous. one of my friends made his own and didn't realize it was on (he claimed it was clear at first before he added some elements to make it red).. so he didn't realize it was aimed at a box of books... until they started smoldering
