  • But You Sat Through the Entire Thing (language and somewhat long)

This is from years ago when I was assistant manager at a large movie theatre chain. I don't know what reminded me of it, but I figured I'd throw it up here because it still makes me chuckle from time to time.

Me: Hi, how can I help you?
SC: Yeah, that movie was complete fucking shit. I want my money back.
Me: Do you have your stub?
    SC: Yeah

Dude hands me the stub, the movie had started and ended... Might I add it ended about 3 hours before he came to me.

Me: Did you sit through the entire movie?
SC: Yeah, but since it was so fucking bad I decided that you guys owed it to me and I went and just sat in another movie.
Me: So, you just decided to go see another movie WITHOUT paying?
SC: You owed it to me.
Me: Um... ok, yeah, I'm going to have to ask you to leave.
SC: Not without my fucking goddamn refund.
Me: You aren't getting a refund, in fact you can get out of my theatre.
SC: Fuck you, I'm not leaving without my money.
Me: Sir, let me paint a picture for you. If you go to Burger King or wherever, and decide you didn't like your food after you ate the whole thing, you aren't entitled to a refund. Services have been rendered... You'll get no such refund from us.
SC: How old are you? 14? Get me your manager!
Me: Actually, I'm 22, but thanks. And I am the manager.

Wash, rinse, repeat for about 15 minutes where he continually asked me for someone higher than me. I continued to decline to get anyone else.

SC: Give me my money back or I'm going to fucking kill you.
Me: Well then. The police are being notified that you just threatened to kill me, and since I asked you to leave and you refuse, you are now trespassing.
    SC: I'm calling your bluff.

Sure enough, the cops showed up about 30 seconds later and dragged this guy out.

He actually came back and apologized later, but needless to say, my guard was up. I never got called to court or anything, so maybe they just gave him some sort of warning. I don't know.

    Sigh.

Aw, you mean I could have sneaked into another movie with a clear conscience after seeing "The Punisher" starring Thomas Jane? And then bullied a manager into giving me a refund? I wish I'd known that then...

I'm not going to lie. I own that movie.

      It isn't THAT bad.

The scene at the beginning where the wife and kid are trying to get away and don't make it...I must confess that scene makes me cry...

Anyways, if this guy snuck into a second movie after the first one...he already got to see a second movie, that's two for the price of one, so shouldn't that be reimbursement enough?

after seeing "The Punisher" starring Thomas Jane?
I should've done that after my brother and I went to see Scary Movie 2... we had originally gone, intending to see Moulin Rouge (I'd seen it once as a celebration for getting my license back after the stroke, bro hadn't yet seen it) but it was no longer playing in that theater, and we were out and about already, we figured we'd catch a different movie... Hmmm... Scary Movie 2? I like comedies... not much for horror... and, then, it turned out to be neither. Damnit.

Well I wouldn't quite say that. It was a horrific comedy.

Kind of like those " 'Genre' Movie"s?

Those ARE made by the same people (well, some of them). Basically, I guess about 3 of the writers from the first Scary Movie are responsible for about 95% of those "_____" Movies.

I own it too. I liked it. It isn't high art, but it's not horrible, either.

I've seen some movies that turned out to suck, including one or two that I ended up walking out on, but I never thought of asking for a refund. I figured that's a chance you take when you go see a movie.

Do a little research, read a couple of reviews, watch a trailer, ask friends with similar tastes, talk to cinema staff, and you can reduce those chances a lot.

Some lunatic called us every day for a week, accusing us of false advertising. She was demanding refunds, free tix, apologies, asskissing, etc.; and when none were forthcoming, threatening us with the BBB and the local consumer watch reporters. Why?

She didn't like Broken Flowers, starring Bill Murray. I wish I were making it up.

Understood. I do all that, and it's extremely rare that it happens. But once in a great while, it does. I think it's happened maybe twice in my lifetime.

Under the same faulty logic, I wonder how many times a year the offices of pro soprts teams get angry letters from fans demanding refunds because the game they went to see was a loss/wasn't exciting?

                            And they aren't joking?!

Will Ferrel in Land of the Lost. NOT the trip down memory lane that I thought it would be, and nothing like what it was being advertised as. The level of sex and drug "humor" was uber-crude and way beyond anything that should have been associated with a kids' show. The girl selling tickets tried to warn me that it might be inappropriate for my kids, but I didn't listen.

Still, I never considered asking for a refund.
