    That is very saddening indeed

I had minor eczema as a child, and HWMBO (my Daddy) had eczema AND psioriasis. Thankfully people never really commented on it. For some reason, now that HWMBO is in Canada, his skin condition has cleared up....

I hope your coworker doesn't take that to heart - afterall, the opinion of one heartless cow is not the opinion of everyone else!!!

I can totally relate to this, as I had severe excema on my hands when I was younger, and I frequently got nasty comments from other kids at school about how my hands were "gross", and since one of the side-effects I had was itching, people "had" to make rude comments about scratching.

Fortunately, this has mostly cleared up, but I still have trouble remembering that the first thing people notice about me is NOT necessarily my hands.
Same here; I had awful excema on my hands, and also in patches on my legs, too. Mine cleared up cuz I grew out of it, but stress will bring me dry patches on my legs. I always wanted to smack people who felt they had to comment on my "scabby hands".

Isn't there something in the ADA about being discriminated against for this sort of stuff?...if I were forced to wear a mask, I'd be looking into bringing the law down on someone. That's unacceptable. Period.
I agree. He should at least look into it. That treatment is totally unacceptable, and he shouldn't have to put up with it.

When I worked at the pet store, one of my coworkers was a woman who was mostly deaf. She was the most knowledgeable person about cats, and gave me a lot of good advice regarding my first cat. However, there was the occassional SC who talked down to her due to her lack of hearing, or complained to management that she "ignored" them when they walked up behind her and she didn't acknowledge them. Fortunately, our management was on her side and if the customer still complained even after having it explained to them, well, they were jerks and were welcome to take their business elsewhere.

This is why I hate so many people in the customer services. Doesn't matter how minor whatever your deformitary is, there will be several several several people who will insult you on that. For no reason. Or they'll stare. Or act like your contagious.

The only minor benefit to it is that you can get some immunity to it. But there will be times when a insult can cut through you.

Only cost is your abilty to trust others and loving oneself.

IMHO, the only monster in this story is standing opposite CR and disguised as a special breed of bitch.

had something like this happen to a friend of mine when she came to my bar for a drink. shes in a wheel chair because she got into an accident that bruised her spinal chord near her pelvis. she's slowly relaerning to walk and now can walk with just some crutches but onto what happened. so she comes to the bar walks in this everyone who works there or goes there for adrink knows her escept for this one guy. he walks right up to her gets down hes at face level and says we don't like your kind here. so i promptly and swiftly grabbed him by the scruff of his jacket and took him around back where i taught him about being polite if you catch my drift. i go back in and have my girlfriend put whatever she drinks on my tab. its crap like this that makes me such an asshole at work when i something wrong.

Okay, some important updates regarding the whole incident.

I hadn't known it when the incident happened, but apparently CR blew up at the bitch for calling him a "monster." THAT is why I had to take over for him on the door that evening for a few minutes, so the MOD could give him a talking to for yelling at a customer, even one who had insulted him.

And yesterday, as I came in for work, about the same time as CR was arriving, the MOD asked me to hop on the door for a few minutes, because they needed to speak to CR. So I do so (not without some griping from Herself, aka Ol' Scarface, who doesn't like it when things happen that she didn't have any say on), and from my place by the front door, I could see CR sitting down in the GM's office, with the GM himself. I obviously couldn't hear what they were saying, but from the gesticulations and body language, it looked like the GM was chewing CR out.

GM leaves not too long after, while CR composes himself or whatever, and then comes back to the door. CR informs me that he got his Final Corrective over the whole thing, and the next step is termination. In other words, CR had a few recent correctives on his file, and if he gets one more corrective, he's gone.

I commiserated with him over the whole thing. CR pointed out that Herself yells at customers or otherwise causes them to scream and complain about her-- and instigates the whole thing-- while he, CR, is the victim and defends himself, and gets written up for it, while Herself escapes without any apparent correctives. I pointed out to him that he has a good case against the wholesale club if he gets fired over this whole thing, and he agreed.

It'd suck royally if CR does end up losing his job over this bitch's complaint, and I hope it doesn't happen.

Let's all pray that we get a Karma Anvil dropping on her.

He doesn't even need to wait until he gets fired; all the writeups are evidence enough of a hostile working environment.

Once a customer asked me what was wrong with him and I said, "He's kind of a smart aleck, but otherwise he's OK." And left it at that.
That response is chock-full of win.

The problem's with my legs, y'all. Not my brain (or, at least, no problems there that I actually want to be rid of. I'm quite proud of my weirdness)

And today when CR came in, he told me he's being forced to wear gloves while on the job.
I'm not certain, but it's possible that could be considered some form of ADA (or similar) violation if other people in that position aren't being made to follow the same requirements.

Since the door about cases has already been opened, he should make a call to the local office to get some advice on that front.

                        ....

There are a lot of monsters out there in the world, and it's very rare that their looks give them away.

                          <snip>

That's a good way to handle it. The best part is they can't push it much further without sounding offensive.
Re the military buddy with service related head trauma.

Personally, I think a better answer is this: "Him? He's a disabled veteran, hurt in the line of duty."

People should not make assumptions about people's disabilities. I don't know any disabled person wants to have whatever their particular problem is. Fortunately, the technology and laws are making it easier than ever for folks with medical problems to live their lives just like those of us who don't.

Too bad the attitudes of some people haven't caught up.
They say that God only gives us what we can handle. Apparently, God thinks I'm a bad ass.

This is beyond inexcusable. I sure hope CR gets a good lawyer. No way should he have to cover his hands because of a customer complaint. And I don't blame him for getting angry at the bitch, either. There's only so much mocking and staring you can take. My aunt has Down's Syndrome and I hate it when people stare at her. I'm more lenient with kids, because they don't understand why someone looks different then them. But for adults to stare and mock someone who's different ? I'm angry just thinking about it.
