There is a caveat to this, though. You said he needs it shipped and is worried about customs: Does this guy speak English well and is he from a culture you understand? You may be dealing with a culture or language barrier. He may honestly believe that what he's doing is appropriate behavior. If this is the case then it's the misunderstanding that's sucky, not the customer.

So don't hem him in with cultural mis-perceptions and you may be able to keep this situation from unraveling completely.
He's from Canada. I'm pretty sure culture isn't the issue.

Good point; you don't want there to be any bias, but you also don't want to encourage greed and selvage-ness...
I don't have an attitude problem. You have a perception problem.

Then he e-mailed me to ask if I could write less than the actual value of the costume when I shipped it, so he wouldn't have to pay customs.
What, so that the person delivering the package sees that it's got a low value and can just be left at the door, because there's no danger of theft? The company that we bought our wedding bands from did that, and we were not amused that our $600 package was just left because of it's listed $20 value.

Oh WOW! The suits and the other stuff you make are marvelous! The heads truely come alive, you really capture the spirit of the furry person.

Yikes. I'd have reported that company to their own customs agency. That's not a cheap fine. And I know in some cases, it will result in the shipper having to have every international package inspected prior to shipment.

That one hadn't occured to us. It wouldn't have happened anyhow, unfortunately. We never even got around to the blistering complaint that we were going to make to them. What with this being right before the wedding = fourth year for me = finishing up a thesis for him, we were rather distracted.

                              bad naughty sheldonrs!

sorry about the sewing asshats; kudos to you for having the talent to not only use a sewing machine but to be able to create with it. i can barely sew a straight line with one.
                              look! it's ghengis khan!
Sorry, but while I can do many things, extracting heads from anuses isn't one of them. (so sayeth the irv)

Ha. Honestly I can barely sew a straight line either. The sewing on a fursuit is pretty much just that, straight linesm and I do a lot of picking out anyhow. :P The only actual difficult thing is stuff like sculpting noses, and getting carved foam to come out symmetrical. (Symmetry is my bane. I swear, I trace the left and right sides of a pattern exactly the same and I still can't get them to be perfectly symmetrical, let alone the sculpted stuff where there's no pattern to trace.)

Oh, as for refunding the guy... I wish! Sadly when I said I worked on this for three months, I also meant that this thing is the better part of three month's income for me. I don't exactly keep that kind of money lying around to hand back to rude customers. I'm afraid somebody has to be MUCH worse than this guy for me to consider refunding them. Much as I do enjoy the whole "I have no boss and I can tell off idiots if I want to" aspect of self-employment, I don't actually excercise that right very often, since I like being able to pay rent and eat.
