  • I Hate Change

and kids, this story involves both. another story from my lovely shift from last night.

so its just after 7:00 and we get hit with the driving school. i can hear the ground shake as they file into the store. the high shrieking giggles, the yelling, the stomping, ahh yes they have arrived.

they shop quickly because they have a short break and have to be back soon.

i open up a register and take the next person in line. a young girl. i thought she was part of driving school but i could be wrong (she was buying 2 things of ice cream...pints?)

behind her is a huge freakin line, across the front of the store, and its only me and the other girl ringing

younger girl : im going to pay for this with change

$4.00 is her total. and she takes forever to sort out and count out her change. i give her dirty looks when she doesnt look at me, and just keep staring at the line behind her. shes finally done and says that should be 4 dollars, honest! but i always double check. usually people give me too much and i give it back. she was short, 9 cents, but i felt like being evil and made her find 9 cents (she had enough)

she may have been quicker to count if she hadnt been blabbing to her friends the whole time "yea this guy was supposed to come over on sunday night, but my parents whisked me away to cape cod for the day" ( i mutter to myself telling her to shut up, i dont think she got the idea)

screw you. whisked away? who says that? and she made it sound like it was a hassle to go. please, i couldve gone instead and come back in the time it took you to count your change

I know i really shouldn't but a lot of times when customers are counting out their change and I have a HUGE line and they're taking forever because they're digging around for the full amount I pull change out of my own pocket to get them out of the store.

I hate it. And I shouldn't do it. But I think i do it to try and save myself from being screamed at by everyone else in line and just get things moving.

    It's a sad sad world.

normally if someone is 10 cents short, if i have it, i'll just cover it to get it over with

i dont know why i didnt this time. maybe i wanted to get the other people in line pissed at the girl (not very nice, but neither was she for paying in all that change! lol)

Most of the time, I HATE HATE HATE the change only people. (Every once in a while I'll get that person right when I'm almost out of change, then he/she is a godsend!)

I mostly hate them cuz they take forever but also 9 out of 10 times I'll just get handed a handful of change. Why the hell can't they count it out? The kid right before you paid in change too but he at least handed me quarters in dollar increments! (loved that kid btw!)

usually the coin issue at my current work is when we sell at offsite events with kids. There are always two or three kids that pull out some nasty change/bills outta somewhere gross (shoes usually..blech!)

But the worst offender I've come across is the old lady who wanted to pay with a sparkletts jug full of pennies.....my manager actually made me take it..

After how many coins should I be counting them out in stacks? If I'm paying the 80cents for my Timbits in dimes, should that be two bunches of four? Having to save my bigger coins for laundry means this is a big problem for me...

I had a lady try and pay for a five dollar order the other night all in pennies. She got angry when I told her that I couldn't take them and said that I should because they were all rolled. (I can't just take rolls I have to open them up and count them due to the store being scammed by being shorted too many times). She had to go and get a five dollar bill from the car and complained loudly how lazy I was and wasn't happy when my manger backed me up.

my manager once made me take a $500 credit card payment in change. It was all in buckets not even seperated or wrapped.

my manager also got mad when i wanted to count it. He told oh dont waste your time just take it. i refused. i got coached for that.

he took the payment and the next day we found out there was only $300 in charge.....the same manager wanted to coach me again for not counting it. Thank Gosh this manager was fired

Usually when someone pulls out a ton of change and takes forever to count it, I'll put their sale on hold and start taking other customers behind them.

Pisses them off every time because when they are done counting their mound of change I'll still make them wait until i get the line smaller.

I only did it for the people who deserved it. If I had extra coins laying around (or occasionally an extra when I counted the drawer to start) I kept them in the extra cup in my till (if it was nickels or dimes I would change them for pennies; quarters I would change for 5 or 10 pennies and dimes or nickels). When I got someone who was short a penny or two I'd cover them; if they were short more than that I only covered them if they were nice.

8 dimes is nothing. It's the ziplock bags full of mixed coins to pay for their $5 item. (General rule: If it's under a dollar don't worry about it. If you have a few dollars or more, split them up.) In my experience it was usually kids who were just learning to count money, too. Teach them at home, Mom...the register with a line behind you is not the place.

I hate that too, and it happens a lot at my pharmacy because we have so many old people that come in. We got yelled at by the assistant manager one day when he noticed that our line had backed up to about 20 or so people. I took him aside and explained to him what the problem was. I had just had an old lady who counted out $8 in change to pay for her prescription. I watched the clock and timed her. She spent 7 minutes counting it out. When I told the manager this, do you think he understood? Nope. His response to me was "That's just an excuse!"

The wife and I paid for a new windshield with $235 in change......

After we visited the banks change counting machine!

I never had many people pay in all change... And those that did helped by having it all in neat easy to see and verify piles.

                          not many are helpful

even if they give me a roll, i still have to verify it

i have lots and lots and lots and lots of change hahaha. but i roll it, and when i remember i offer to bring it to work for the safe in exchange for 20s

One time in college when my girlfriend (now wife) and her brother were visiting, we went to McDonanld's and had to pay in change (and all we had to take it in was a cereal bowl ) We waited until about 8 in the evening to go (so it wouldn't be busy) and the first thing I said was "I'm SO sorry about this, but all we have is change. Is that OK?" I thought the cashier was going to kiss me! Turns out, they had almost run out of change and the banks were already closed and would be closed for a couple days (this was a Saturday night and Monday was a holiday). Manager even gave us some free food for it (we got McNuggets, they threw in some free fries).

PLEASE tell us this 'manager' had to personally cover the shortage as he authorized taking the change without counting it.
