The day or two before pay day I may end up raiding my piggy bank for change, but if it's something I know the exact prive of, I'll count it out before I leave the house and put it in my pocket, and while waiting in line, I'll organize the change in my hand by coin denomination so I can easly count it into dollar increments at the counter.

Items inclunding my ciggarettes, or pop, usually on my way to work for the night

I have to admit, I paid in all change at McDonalds last night. But, it was only $2, I had 1 $1 coin, and 4 quarters. It was dug out of the coin section of my wallet while I was waiting for the $20+ order in front of me to finish up. My all-change payment didn't even slow them down.

I was manning cash for the first shift at the big relief sale up here this morning. I actually had a woman come up with a baggie of change and ask me to count out what I needed. I ended up with $1.5 in dimes and nickels. (Counting quickly, and that's what was there first). I also took what was probably the only $2 coin in the entire bag, so it evened out. And exact change was worth it. ($4 product, we didn't want to end up running out of $1 coins).

However, as this was a charity fundraiser, and we weren't a very good booth (pork on a bun, good stuff, but nowhere near as big as the strawberry pies or the spring rolls), there weren't any problems with a bit of a delay. When the line for your food is under 5 minutes there's absolutely no way to complain.

Was working Starbucks, Saturday morning rush, drive through. Big line of cars, I'm taking orders. Turn to the car at my window and repeat the order now on my screen. Not it. Next order? Nope.

"We didn't order at the box, we didn't feel like waiting."

Ok, fine. Take their order. Random crap. Around $11 for the order.

THEY GIVE ME A BIG BAG OF MIXED CHANGE.

I was furious. But Starbucks has a "Just Say Yes" policy and I couldn't refuse. It held up our line and screwed the entire flow.

this is not sucky, 5 coins takes like 2 seconds to count and shove in the till.

Paying in coinage is not sucky, taking 20 mins to count out pennies only for the server to have to count it again is the suck.

CW: So what exactly do you do in retentions?

I've been guilty of paying in change, but I try to never pay more then $2-3, and never in anything smaller then quarters unless I know the exact cost of something. For example, Dew is $1.89, so I'll use either 8 quarters or 7 quarters and 2 dimes. I also make sure there isn't a line. Maybe this is still sucky, but it seems to me like if you're going to do something inconvinient like that, you may as well minimize the suck.
(I pay in change because I'm broke half the time and often only have change.)
