I LOVE Anime I would sooo love to go to a convention. It's interesting though, why I never thought there would be sucky people there. I guess I was blinded by the fact that anybody could be grumpy with all those awesome anime stuffers around! The hats were adorable!

I have volunteered for Security at DragonCon. It was an experience, helping to wrangle 40,000 fans.
This sounds fun. Do they provide food and housing if you volunteer? Because if so I may just have to volunteer next year.

Hahaha. No. If you volunteer for Security, it will cost you $20 for admission. In return you are required to work for them for 25 hours over the con.

That's it. They provide nothing else. Unless you're a director, then you get a room.

Which isn't to say that you can't have fun, but it's not necesarily going to be from the convention. It will be from the antics of the attendees, of the interactions of the guests, or of hearing just how many things went wrong in the background.

...WHAT? Really? ACen gives (most of) its staff a room and feeds all its staff. I'm calling bullshit.

I had a recent con that wanted the staff to work and pay for partial badges with no other recompense.

In their defense, however, this was their very first year.

All other conventions I've volunteered for gave full badges and sometimes room and staff feed on top.

Dragon Con is, no offense, a little messed up. I can fully believe that they would still charge a person working for them for room, badge, etc. I'd still not mind volunteering though. If anybody knows of a con that needs a licensed security person after May 15 of next year, have em contact me . Lol.

You may call bullshit all you want, but I suggest you read the volunteer Terms & Conditions on DragonCon's website before you go hoarse.

The bullshit they're calling is that the con gets volunteers, works them for 3 days worth of wages and docks first-timers $20 for the privilege.

I suspect they think with over 40,000 attendees each year, Dragoncon could afford to be a little less stingy to their volunteers.

It's best to think of volunteering for DragonCon, especially for Security, as an abusive relationship.

There's another con that I go to where the staff still pays to get in... they pay $25 for their badge and are responsible for their own room & food.

ACen & Youmacon are the only two conventions that I've worked at where they con covers food & housing for their staff. *shrug*

I don't mind paying for my own food, and even for my own room if it's a con I'd have been going to anyway. But making staff pay for their own badges is just bad form in my opinion.

I agree with that. I've staffed at many conventions where I pay for my own room and food. But making the staff pay for a badge with the amount of work that staff does is just a slap in the face.

But anyway... next convention for me is ConFusion in Troy, MI (exit 69/Big Beaver Rd) in January. I'm NOT staffing so that will be fun. Next anime convention for me will be ACen... I'm gonna find a way down there one way or another. Now just have to see if I can convince Raven to fly in for that.

I got my bunny hat today!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I absolutely love it, and it is SO warm. The timing couldn't have been better as we got our first serious snowfall last night.

I got SO many compliments on it when I wore it out to do my shopping/errands.

Now I gotta save up for another, I'm hooked. Maybe the penguin next.

Which bunny did you get? and YAY! Glad you liked it. I wore my long blue bunny on Saturday night and got a lot of compliments too.

And yes, the Penguin is adorable.
