Don't feel bad. I'm not joking when coworkers pulled this on me... and i seriously didn't get it. For over an hour I was like "what the fuck is 'updog'?" and getting mad because they wouldn't tell me what it was.

That was in 2008. I finally got it maybe this year when I saw someone using the joke here.

Maybe I'm dense, but I'm still not getting it.

    I think I'm more square than I originally thought . . .

And that explanation makes more sense now. Thanks.

For no reason I can fathom, I was thinking about this while showering, yesterday, and I remembered that it's an updated version of a much older joke.

The older version I know (which is likely not the original, either), is about "updock" not "updog" and plays out the exact same way, but you can add a visual cue like you're munching a carrot.

When I started reading your intro, I thought you were using "prison" and "inmates" metaphorically. Then suddenly, I was going, "Whoa, she works in a prison prison, and she means "inmates" as in, y'know, inmates!

You have a chance to walk away and never make a comment like that again before you get written up, yes.

He probably figured it out when they served him with the write-up from me for trying to establish a personal relationship with me.
Perhaps that was what they were going for because they, ummm, got off on it somehow?

"Ooh, discipline me, whip me, write me up!"

Then there's the old one where someone sits and mutters "matta, matta, matta", til someone finally says "What's a matta?"
To which the first person, usually in thick Italian accent, then says "I don't know, what's a matta with you?"

                    Madness takes it's toll....
                    Please have exact change ready.

                      updog, hee.

Inmates write to the library asking for info. Sometimes they want info. on schools or becoming educated, but sometimes it's "I want to get in touch with my baby-mama" or "I havn't talked to my Uncle JOe in years, can you give me his address?" Of course, we are thinking, "OMG! They want the address of one of their victims!" But it seems they just need to tell their parol officer where they are going to live when they get out.

Also, an inmate decided to draw a pic (with crayon) of one of the librarians. Yes, she was creeped out.
When I was in college I was inducted to a couple of honor societies. The information was reported in my hometown paper, including my photo.

Next thing I know, I get this long rambling letter from a prison inmate who wants me to be his girlfriend. He saw the article and pic in the paper.

Needless to say, I was creeped out. I never responded.

I hate these kind of stories because they always leave me with a strong desire to see the person. We are always curious to know what someone looks life with all these guys trying to be with her.
Having seen pictures of Kara, I can tell you she is quite lovely, truly a beautiful woman inside and out.

Basically, it's like charging someone with a crime. There are rules, and if they violate those rules they can be punished. There are 3 classes of offenses and 2 ways to handle many of them. Most Class II and all Class III charges can be handled using a Summary Judgement. The officer writes up the inmate, explaining what happened, what the inmate is being charged with, and why. The officer, at the time of writing the SJ, will determine the sanction from a list of sanctions printed on that report. Usually restriction from privileges for up to 10 days, or a fine of up to $10. The inmate has 3 choices, to plead Guilty or No Contest, or to refuse the Summary. If they refuse it, then it will have a formal hearing with the Disciplinary Coordinator. Which leads to the second type of write-up, the Disciplinary Report. It's the same as a Summary Judgement, but you have no control over the sanctions that will be imposed and the inmate will have a formal hearing about the charge. This is where they can be sentenced to a period of disciplinary segregation (be put in "the hole").

While I'm sure this is true (I haven't seen photos, but she comes across here as a lovely person - so lovely inside, at least!)...

.... While I'm sure this is true, she works at a prison. At least some of the inmates are probably trying to see if they can play mind-games with her by using sexuality, sexual suggestion, and so forth.

At a guess, if they can break her professional demeanour, they 'win' - in their own minds.

Problem is: Kara's too good for them. In all senses of the word.

                                2. If you're consistently getting results you don't want, change what you do.
                                3. Deal with the situation you have now, however it occurred.
                                4. Accept the consequences of your decisions.
