  • There's another perfect example of differing tastes. I really love the Dunkel, and will be bringing several on my fishing trip this weekend. Sorry you had to end your upper midwest beer tour on a sour note.

Speaking of the fishing trip: I will be traveling through Manitoba briefly. If I can find some nummy Canadian micro brews, I'll pick some up, and review them. Heck, I've got about $50 Canadian to spend, and thus surpassing the 24 12 oz bottle/can beer limit (the Northwest Angle border is unmanned).

      • I probably have had a true dunkel. just don't remember for sure.

Review time. It'll be my birthday in 3 minutes, so a special beer.

        Backpocket First Anniversary Stout.

        9% ABV.
Color - black as night. not much head.
Nose- a bit, but not too strong.
Taste - wow, really good. I can taste the fact it was aged in Bourbon barrels. I love that taste.really good, sadly I won't be able to get another. 7 out of 10.

          • Well, we were out fishing, and the wind and waves kicked our ass, so at the bar enjoying a beer.

Kokanee Glacier Fresh Beer from Creston BC

I do have a bad feeling about this one because the bartender said it was similar to labats.

fudge, it is. not good at all. I'd rather be in the boat, with 5 foot waves getting soaked, drinking my craft beers. 3 outof 10, and that's being nice.

            • Ironic that your post about a truly bad beer carries a post number that has unpleasant connotations for Yanks.

              • The following is a review of a beer that I've had before, that I've taken notes on before, but that I've never reviewed here. So while I'm drinking it currently--a big bomber bottle of it, to be precise--the review is several months old from my original tasting of it.

Rogue Voodoo Doughnut Pretzel, Raspberry, & Chocolate Ale (Oregon, 5.4%): Dark brown to black color, virtually no head to speak of. Very nice raspberry jam nose. Taste is of sweet raspberry with some chocolate, but no pretzel, unless you count the dry finish. As I love the combination of raspberry and chocolate, I really like this beer, even if I don't taste all three elements. Score it a 7.0.

And the past review holds true with the current bottle. Picturing drinking a beer that is like a chocolate cookie with raspberry jam in the center. That's this beer. And I have a whole big bottle of it.

                True Blood, here I come!

                • Well, I'm finally back home from my fishing vacation. It was an awesome time with many walleyes caught and eaten. The only bad part was the 30 mph winds, rain, and 4 foot waves. sadly, my trip through Canada I didn't find any Canadian craft beers. I did find some Canadian rum that I have to do some research on to see if it's here in the States, and review it when I get a chance.

After a 7 hour dive and 4 hours at work, I'm where I belong - happy hour, and a beer revie.

                  Brooklyn Sorachi Ace

It is a light golden color. I can't detect any nose on it.

Taste. well it has a florial taste to it. I like the taste, and would order it again. 6 out of 10.

Edit - home now. the rum is Lamb's Navy Rum. So, have any of my rum experts here heard of this rum?

I'll probably try some on Thursday. I'm not a big rum drinker, so who knows how it will turn out. I just wish I could have found some microbrews on my brief Canadian adventure.

                      • Shiner Wild Hare Pale Ale (Texas, 5.7%): nice caramel red color. Subtle, almost creamy nose with hints of hops. Taste is slightly hoppy. A decent pale ale. Drinkable, tasty, but nothing overly special. About par for the course for the folks from Shiner. 6.0.

                        • Most fruit beers are unimpressive. Some are downright disgusting. (Hello, Sea Dog Blue Paw, I'm talking to you.) Especially blueberry beers. For some reason, they seem to be the worst offenders. And not just the obvious ones, like, say, Sea Dog. Even otherwise good breweries seem to struggle with blueberry beers, while lots of other fruits are well-represented in various beers and ciders (raspberry, strawberry, apple, cherry, peach, pear, tangerine, etc.) But on a whim, when buying a mixed six-pack tonight, I decided to give this one a try, as I've seen it but never tried it. Who knows? It might not suck.

Wild Blue Premium Blueberry Lager (Blue Dawg Brewing, Missouri, 8% ABV): Color is a very dark purplish, with a purple white head. The nose is all blueberry, but not overly sweet. I'm surprised. I expected worse. The taste is.....blueberry. Not sugary sweet artificial blueberry cereal crap (Sea Dog, anyone?), not even like fruit jam, like many other fruit beers, but more like, well, blueberry juice. Carbonated blueberry juice. It certainly doesn't taste like beer. Which is a bit of later down. But the label says it's made from all natural ingredients, and I tend to believe it. It even has a hint of the tartness that you'll get in a batch of fresh blueberries where some of them aren't as sweet as the others.

Is it great? No. It in no way rises to the heights of the amazing Tangerine Wheat from Lost Coast. It's not even quite on level with the many Belgian lambics. But it is a decent blueberry beer, and compared to the competition, that's a good thing. Still waiting for really great (or even really good) blueberry beer, but until someone makes one, Wild Blue will do. 6.5.

                          • Monte Carlo Bock (Guatemala, no ABV I could find in any of my usual sources)....

Color: dark, dark brown, almost black. Malty nose. Nice malty taste, but not over the top. Well-balanced, tasty, maltyish beer. Nice. Tasty and drinkable dark beer. 7.0.

                            • From Kona Brewing in Hawaii, Castaway India Pale Ale (6.0% ABV). That's right, kids....Jester's gonna try an IPA. It doesn't happen often, but it does happen.

Color is an attractive and inviting orange amber. Nose is pleasantly hoppy and refreshing. The taste is....unusual. At least for an IPA. It has hoppiness, though most of it is on the initial taste, and fades quickly. It's also a bit sweet, but not in the typical hopped up IPA sweetness, but more of a fresh fruit for breakfast sweetness. Like biting into a pineapple, though this beer is not pineappley at all. Just that kind of pleasant natural invigorating sweetness, if you will. I actually rather like this, and would drink this regularly. It's sort of like a hoppy lager. I'm a surprised fan. Color it a 7.0. Good stuff.
